Belize isn't your typical Caribbean vacation spot. Unlike many of the islands in the region, this Central American country isn't well known for its white-sand beaches or gambling hot spots.
Although the beaches aren't vast or large in number, Belize's oceanfront property is still spectacular. The country's casinos, like the beaches, are few in number, but they offer just as much of a possibility of winning big as gaming palaces found at glitzier Caribbean destinations.
The most popular beaches in Belize aren't on the mainland but on the shores of the country's cayes (islands), which are located a few miles out to sea. The most popular beach is on Ambergris Caye in the little city of San Pedro Town. Here you can enjoy a peaceful walk on the short but breathtakingly beautiful stretch of sugar-white sands. Other beaches in the cayes include those on Caye Caulker and on the Turneffe Islands. There are also a few beaches located on the country's mainland. Belize's coastline is shrouded in lush green palm trees, which adds to the tropical ambiance of this amazing vacation spot. The best beaches to visit on the mainland are on Belize's southern coast.
Belize is no Las Vegas, but it does have two casinos where you can try your luck at becoming a big winner. The biggest casino in Belize is called The Princess Hotel-Casino, which is located in the capital, Belize City. The casino was added onto the Princess Hotel to bring a little excitement to the city's nightlife. Before the construction of the Princess Hotel-Casino, Belize had no organized gambling establishments. Travelers can also try their hands at Belize's second-largest and only other casino, The Palace. Here you can play a game of black jack or pull the arm of many sizzling slot machines for a chance to win big. It's all about hospitality at The Palace, so while you're enjoying great gaming, you'll feel right at home.
...visit as many of the ruins as possible.
Some of the most breathtaking landmarks in Belize are the Mayan ruins. There are eight within the country, including everything from large city structures to smaller burial sites. Each site offers a little something different, and vacationers are encouraged to visit as many of the ruins as possible. You can also learn about a number of topics important to Belizeans when you visit one of the country's museums.
Tourism centered around natural attractions is where Belize shines; with a total of 80 percent of the country covered in rainforest, who could expect anything less? Much of this land is protected, and conservation areas have been set up where vacationers can view indigenous flora and fauna. There are both inland sites and marine habitats that visitors are encouraged to tour. An extensive system of underground caves as well as above ground waterfalls are not to be missed.
Although Belize is not famous for expansive beaches and elaborate casinos, it does offer other amazing attractions. The country's impressive historical sites and its ecological balance keep visitors coming back year after year. With a virtually untouched habitat that allows many kinds of wildlife to thrive, Belize offers many things to see and do on your tropical retreat.
