There are plenty of ways to get around in Belize. For long distances, planes and buses make travel easy. For more local travel, take a bike, taxi, or ferry. Alternately, rent your own transportation.
Local airlines generally offer quick and convenient service. However, buses offer a more cultural glimpse of Belize and are also the best option for travelers on a budget, as they have extremely low prices for long-distance travel.
Bicycles are used around town, but can also be used as mountain bikes. The one drawback to bikes is the tendency of bumpy Belizean roads to cause flat tires. Meanwhile, taxis are fairly cheap and quick. Ferries and water taxis go places that land-based transit cannot and are a nice way to catch a glimpse of the Caribbean.
Car rentals are another popular option, but are expensive. Insurance and gas prices will drive your rental costs up even higher. Budget-conscious travelers should look at public transportation rather than car rentals.
If you are traveling by public transportation and end up stranded between small towns after the only bus of the day has come through, some would suggest hitching a ride. Of course, this can be dangerous and should be done at your own discretion. Trucks will sometimes pick up riders for a little bit of cash.
